Upcoming Open House Meeting

September 16, 2019 By Speakers Club

Brighton and Hove Speakers Club are having an Open House “Taster” meeting on Wednesday 25th September 2019 and we’re inviting anyone and everyone who would like to get to know how Toastmasters clubs help people improve their public speaking. Whether it’s getting over the nerves or honing your performance for a sales pitch, Toastmasters can help.

Everyone is welcome and we’ve rejigged the program to include some special roles to help newcomers get an idea of how Toastmasters works.

The evening will include the following.

The usual warm up where everyone is invited to speak for 15 seconds, usually answering a simple question such as “What was your favourite holiday”. This serves to get us all in the mood but everyone is free to pass if they’re not in the mood.

Two “Member Spotlights” where current members share their experiences of how they came to Toastmasters and how it has helped them.

An “Ice Breaker” Speech from a new member giving their first speech prepared speech to the club and a speech from a more experienced speaker.

A segment for impromptu speaking which we call “Table Topics”. This is a fun part of the meeting and a chance for anyone to step up and give a short speech of up to 2 and a half minute on a subject handed to them just before the speech.

We think it wil be a great night and and if you’re interested in the club but not quite sure about joining then the Open House meeting is for you.

2019 Open House

January 24, 2019 By Speakers Club

Last night was a fantastic occasion at the B & H Speakers Open House when we welcomed around 20 enthusiastic visitors. Huge thanks to our experienced speaker Carol from London Bridge Toastmasters for her speech and to Jo for giving her very first “Ice Breaker” speech.

Also thanks to the many guests who took part, in the “warm up” but most of all to those who volunteered for our impromptu speaking segment “Table Topics”. This is a challenging role but I’m sure everyone agreed it was very worthwhile and a brilliant way to dive straight into public speaking. If you weren’t quite ready for it last night then don’t worry, we have Table Topics at every meeting. We allow everyone to progress at their own pace so if you want to just sit and observe for a while that’s OK or if you want to bash through our speech program then that’s good too.

We hope that many of the guests who came will visit us again and consider joining. If you didn’t manage to get to the meeting last night but are still interested then remember that Brighton and Hove Speakers invite guests to ALL of our meetings. Just show up sometime between 7pm and 7:30pm and be assured of a warm welcome.

If you’d like to know more or discuss anything then just get in touch with our President or Vice President for Membership at the email addresses below.

Next Week’s Open House

January 17, 2019 By Speakers Club

The agenda has been finalised for the upcoming Open House “Taster” meeting next Wednesday 23rd January 2019.

An “Ice Breaker” Speech from a new member giving their first speech prepared speech to the club.
A speech from an experienced speaker from a London club.

Two evaluations of the prepared speeches.

A segment for impromptu speaking which we call “Table Topics”. This is a fun part of the meeting and a chance for anyone to step up and give a short speech of up to 2 and a half minute on a subject handed to them just before the speech.

A Grammarian’s report who will give his impression on the language used throughout the meeting.

Of there will also be the usual technical roles such as Sergeant at Arms and Time Keeper.

It’s going to be a splendid evening and if you’re interested in the club but not quite sure if it’s for you then next Wednesday is a chance to come and check us out.

A New Year, A New You

December 24, 2018 By Speakers Club

Happy New Year from B&H Speaker Club.

You’ve had your turkey and sherry and listened to the Queen’s speech, or if you’re from Brighton, you’re still hungry after a meagre meal of organic nutroast and Algerian cucumbers and your head is buzzing from parsnip and ginger smoothies, you’re desperate for a glass of red or a mince pie but listening to some half baked irreligious bunkum spouted by a bearded anarchist from Luton….

Just consider your new year’s resolutions for 2019 and realise the fantastic material you have for your next speech at B&H Speakers on the subject of “My Christmas”.

To celebrate all this we’re having a social!!

Current members, new members, old members, lapsed members,  guests, visitors, waverers, strangers, drop-in, drop outs, family, partners, neighbors, friends, romans, countryman, compatriots and cronies or just drag in anyone who might gain from gaining confidence in public speaking.

A New Year’s Resolution You Can Keep

January 6, 2017 By Speakers Club

Free 2017 Taster
Free 2017 Taster

This post is from 2017 – what a yawn! We have a new taster meeting coming up on 23rd January 2019. Check it out here.

Brighton and Hove Speakers Club is the ideal place to work on your fear of public speaking or hone the skills you already have.  We will be holding a Free Taster Session at The Courtlands Hotel in Hove at 7pm on Wednesday 25th January 2017. The meeting will follow the normal structure but have less speakers giving time for the Toastmaster to explain to guests what is happening. The idea will be to have members speak as usual but also allow guests to gain a good understanding of what the club offers.

Guests will be free to just observe or, if they wish, take part in the impromptu speaking section of the meeting known as Table Topics.

Just turn up on the night or for more information contact us first.

After the meeting you are welcome to join us in the bar or at a local pub.
