Uluru, Wine Wednesdays, Power Poses, Legacy and a Wonderful Life. A cracking meeting last night. Thanks to all the speakers and to those who performed roles. Congratulations to Kay for Best Speaker and Pat for Best Evaluator and special congratulations to our two Ice Breakers Laura and Hanna. Also thanks to Dee who is to become our new Sergeant At Arms. Next meeting is the Christmas Special on 21st December – Guests Welcome.
A very successful debate last night at B & H Speakers. The Motion was “The values of feminism are essential for the future of the UK” and the debate seemed to swing on the definition of Feminism. The motion was carried with only one person voting against. Thanks to Jez and Barry for proposing and opposing and to all the others who contributed. Also thanks to all those who took part in Table Topics.
We intend to have another debate in the new year. Remember, the next meetings are 7th and 21st December.
Stonking good meeting last night! Thanks to our guests for attending; you are always very welcome. We had three CC2’s with great examples of organising speeches. Also a CC8 with Jez doing what he does best: Video! Congratulations to Vivienne (Best Speaker), Barry (Best Table Topic) and Andy (Best Evaluator). Thanks to Dee for his innovative approach to Table Topics.
Also big congratulations to David Sutcliffe who, as a Toastmasters Parliamentarian for our District, was given a special award for his work helping make District 91 the 4th best in the world! – Yeha – We must be doing something right.
Win/Win negotiation, Tolerance, Gardening to Yoga and a very imaginative speech on wild animals. Another fab meeting last night.
Congratulations to Nigel for his excellent Ice Breaker speech; to James who won Best Speaker, Endrina for Best Table Topic and Jack for Best Evaluator.
Thanks to Dorothy and Gordon for coming all the way from Eastbourne and Gordon for stepping up and taking the Grammarian role. Roles like Grammarian are, in some ways, better real life experience than speeches as they involve interaction with the meeting. They help build confidence while on stage.
We need roles filled for the club to function so check Easyspeak every weekend prior to a meeting and sign up for a role.
If you’re new to evaluating don’t be daunted by the excellence of the speeches. We all need to start somewhere and everyone’s opinions are useful feedback.
We were a little disorganised with the equipment last night because we’re running without a Sergeant At Arms. Volunteers for this role would be welcome. (This could be a shared role)

The club debate will take place on the 30th November and members will get a chance to contribute and vote.
The motion will be “This house believes the values of feminism are essential for the future of the UK”.
The Seagulls, sartorial elegance, JFK and Rumpelstiltskin!!! Some fantastic speeches last night matched by excellent evaluations. Well done everyone. Congratulations to Best Speaker: Jack Newnham, Best Table Topics AND Best Evaluator Jez Kay.
If anyone wants a mentor then please contact Jez or myself. Remember that the debate Education slot will now take place on the 26th October.
Watch this space for news on the Christmas bash!
Thanks everyone for a fascinating meeting last night. Youngest child syndrome, obscure languages and a spot of Shakespeare. What could be better? Congratulations to Cat Neligan for Best Speaker, Josh Jenner for Best Table Topic and Mariam Crichton for Best Evaluator. Also well done Dan for holding it all together as Toastmaster.
Next meeting is 12th October.
I have to confess to being a little irreverent when talking all things Brighton and Hove Speakers Club.
Five things –
1) I always tell people that this club is not like the Masons
2) That we’re the best Toastmasters Club in the whole of the UK (if not the world)
3) That BAHSC is far more diverse than any speakers club that you can imagine
4) That the speakers are more funny and informative
5) That I’m right about all 4 above
Well, to prove it all, members Rebecca and Kay have only gone and come 1st and 2nd in the Area Contest for Humorous Speakers and Table Topics speakers respectively!
I should come down from my lofty mount for a bit…
First of all, congratulations to both of them for being completely fabulous.
They’re not the only fab ones in the group of course. But they went for it and came out on top. And that’s a most noble thing.
The wonderful thing about being in a speakers club like BAHSC is that there is constant support from your peers. Members are encouraged to face their demons and do what most are most afraid to do – stand up and speak. And of course they are constructively evaluated so that they can fast become the inspiring and confident vocal peeps they are inside.
And once they’ve built their confidence and trust up (or maybe were just born that way) they can enter club and area contests just like Rebecca and Kay did. And generally grab the nettle and get involved with allsorts, from roles such as toastmaster, evaluator, grammarian, timekeeper and Sergeant-at-arms, to organising club social events, being VP PR (that’s me), maybe even becoming President of the club.
It’s a great place, it really is. But just don’t take my word for it. Roll up and try it out – everyone gets a go, member or guest – and get set for a memorable pastime in the best Toastmasters Club on The Planet.
Congratulations to Rebecca for winning Brighton & Hove Humorous Speech Contest last night with her Ice Breaker!!!! Also, congratulations to Kay for winning the Table Topics Competition. Thanks to everyone who took part and everyone who attended another successful event at B & H Speakers.
Both Rebecca and Kay go forward to the Area Contests on Saturday at the Landsdown Hotel in Eastbourne. Everyone welcome. Workshop starts at 10:30 and competition starts at 2pm.
